2026 planning note: Dollywood's Harvest Festival runs September 14–October 31, 2026. Lower and mid-elevation fall color commonly becomes especially vivid from mid-October into early November, but peak timing varies with weather.

When should you visit in October?

There is no single guaranteed peak-color date. Higher elevations tend to change earlier, while lower elevations around the valleys and gateway towns often develop later. If fall color is the priority, build flexibility into your driving plan instead of betting the entire trip on one overlook.

Where should you stay?

Choose Gatlinburg when national-park access and walkable evenings matter most. Choose Pigeon Forge when Dollywood, shows and family attractions are the priority. A mountain-view cabin can make foliage part of the trip even on a slower day.

Start with the cabin

October lodging can be a major part of the experience. Compare cabin options before locking in the rest of the itinerary.

A simple 3-day October plan

  1. Day 1: Settle into Gatlinburg or your cabin, then keep the evening flexible.
  2. Day 2: Start early in the national park, choose a scenic drive or hike, and return before the busiest evening traffic.
  3. Day 3: Make Pigeon Forge and Dollywood your anchor, especially during Harvest Festival.

Don't forget the park parking tag

Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires a parking tag when a vehicle is parked for more than 15 minutes. Buying and printing it before the trip can save time during a busy October visit.

Deeper planning notes

Why October feels crowded

October combines fall color with one of the park’s most popular travel periods. NPS says Cades Cove Loop Road and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail are among the busiest fall destinations.

When fall color peaks

NPS says the last three weeks of October are typically the best overall window, but elevation and weather shift the timing. Higher elevations often change first, followed by lower elevations later.

The practical October strategy

Enter the park early, carry a backup scenic destination and avoid making every day depend on Cades Cove. Foothills Parkway and Look Rock can provide mountain views when the most famous areas are jammed.
