Smoky Mountains in November: Weather, Snow & Road Planning
November can be a great quieter-season trip, but do not choose it solely because you expect a snowy Gatlinburg vacation. Elevation changes everything.
Will it snow in November?
It can, but snow is not guaranteed in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Higher elevations can be colder and may see snow or ice when the towns below do not. Clear roads in town also do not guarantee the same conditions on mountain roads.
Roads can change quickly
Primary park roads such as Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road and Cades Cove Loop Road are generally open year-round, weather permitting. Weather can still cause temporary closures, and secondary roads have seasonal schedules.
Choose your cabin with weather in mind
If your group is nervous about icy roads, prioritize easier access over the highest possible mountain view. Ask about driveway grade and road maintenance before booking.
What to pack
- Layers rather than one heavy outfit
- Rain protection
- Good walking shoes
- A warm layer for higher elevations
- Flexible plans in case a mountain road closes
Check conditions close to departure
Deeper planning notes
What November weather really means
At lower elevations, NPS climate averages for Gatlinburg are about 61°F for the monthly high and 33°F for the low, with roughly 0.7 inches of average November snowfall. Higher elevations can be 10–20°F colder and can see snow or ice when town is clear.
Do not book a November trip expecting snow
Snow is possible at high elevations in November, but it is not dependable in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. If snow is the main reason for the trip, January and February historically offer better odds in the mountains.
Road planning matters more than the forecast icon
Primary park roads are generally open year-round weather permitting, while some secondary roads close seasonally. Kuwohi Road is scheduled through late November in 2026 but can close for snow, ice or hazardous conditions. Check NPS conditions before heading into the park.
